The system was expanded, revised, and published in multiple book editions over several decades and has become one of the most widely used pen stenography systems in the world. Gregg's shorthand is a phonetic system created specifically for the English language and records the sounds the speaker makes rather than the spelling of the individual words. Based upon a series of elliptical figures and bisecting lines, Gregg's system remains in use all over the world, even as the popularity of stenography has decreased in the digital age. This effective shorthand method is renowned for how intuitive the system is to learn, how easy it is to note differentiations in similar sounds, and how quickly it can be written as someone is speaking. This concise and easy-to-follow guide to learning Gregg's system includes instructions on how to note the speaker's grammar, punctuation, and spelling and remains a useful shorthand system for many in the business, legal, and journalism fields. In it, we are asked: What is a good speech? What do popular audiences find persuasive? How does one compose a persuasive speech? Aristotle considers these questions in the context of the ancient Greek democratic city-state, in which large audiences of ordinary citizens listened to speeches pro and con before casting the votes that made the laws, decided the policies, and settled the cases in court. Persuasion by means of the spoken word was the vehicle for conducting politics and administering the law. After stating the basic principles of persuasive speech, Aristotle places rhetoric in relation to allied fields such as politics, ethics, psychology, and logic, and he demonstrates how to construct a persuasive case for any kind of plea on any subject of communal concern. Aristotle views persuasion flexibly, examining how speakers should devise arguments, evoke emotions, and demonstrate their own credibility. The treatise provides ample evidence of Aristotle's unique and brilliant manner of thinking, and has had a profound influence on later attempts to understand what makes speech persuasive.

The new translation of the text is accompanied by an introduction discussing the political, philosophical, and rhetorical background to Aristotle's treatise, as well as the composition and transmission of the original text and an account of Aristotle's life.
Author Biography

Robin Waterfield is a writer, living in Greece. Judge, to which verse numbers have been added. Romanized Sanskrit terms have been updated to modern IAST standards, except for three deviations meant to aid in proper pronunciation. The Voice of the Silence represents a collection of fragments from an ancient and unknown text called "The Book of the Golden Precepts". It outlines the two paths of spiritual enlightenment: the first, the path of spiritual selfishness, where the goal is one's own escape from suffering; and the second, the path of spiritual altruism, where the goal is to give oneself wholly to uplifting all of humanity. This second path is called the path of the Bodhisattva and is modeled on the Buddha's teachings. It is to encourage the few true mystics in this world to adopt this path of unselfish and unceasing service to humanity that the Voice of the Silence was written. Those interested in such a path will find all they need to start their journey in this little book. "Undoubtedly Madame Blavatsky had in some way been initiated into the deeper side of Mahayana teaching and then gave out what she deemed wise to the Western world..." (Eastern Buddhist, old series, 5:377) "Here is the real Mahayana Buddhism." (The Middle Way, August 1965, p. 90.) - D.T. It naturally follows that there is certain interdependence between religious writings. To understand any one sacred book completely it is necessary to also understand all other sacred books. The Christian Bible is the greatest book in English literature. But like most other great books, it must be approached with understanding, gentleness, and a sincere desire to find truth. A few people have successfully done this. As a result, they have gained access to miraculous and unused powers that mankind once had, but have lost. According to the author, this Cosmic Intelligence is limited in man due to his diminished capacity to receive and express it. This book lays out a complete program on how to regenerate the cells and gain access to this higher consciousness. It is the first in a series of five books that Kardec wrote that are collectively known as the 'Spiritist Codification'. Although the other four books; 'The Medium's Book', 'The Gospel According to Spiritism', 'Heaven and Hell' and 'The Genesis According to Spiritism' are of great importance to the Spiritist movement it is 'The Spirits Book' that lays out the doctrine of the belief system. The Spiritist movement was founded by Allen Kardec and although its roots lay in Spiritualism there are differences in belief. The most important of these differences is the Spiritist belief in reincarnation. Although some Spiritualists believe in reincarnation and some do not, all Spiritists consider it as a basic truth of their ideology. In the 1850's, whilst investigating the afterlife, Kardec communicated in s ances with a collection of spirits named 'The Spirit of Truth' who discussed many important topics such as life after death, good and evil, the universe and the origin of spirits, amongst others. 'The Spirit of Truth' counted many of history's great thinkers amongst its number such as Thomas of Aquino, Voltaire and Augustine of Hippo. Over time and after several sessions with the group Kardec had gathered enough information to convince him of life after death and he was compelled to spread the teachings of 'The Spirit of Truth'. He 'codified' their comments and listed them as answers to questions and this is the content of 'The Spirits Book'. The subjects that Kardec discusses, via 'The Spirit of Truth', laid down the foundations for the Spiritist philosophy and all of the concepts that would become, and still are, key to the movement's thinking have their genesis in the book. The belief that there is one Supreme Being, God, who created everything in the universe, is postulated. According to the text the Devil does not exist and Jesus is a messenger of God. Although the book does not refer to Jesus as the son of God and no mention is made of the 'immaculate conception' he is considered God's perfect messenger and his teachings are to be adhered to. Reincarnation and the survival of the soul after death are vital beliefs and it is stated that it is through reincarnation that lessons are learnt that can be taken into the next life and that every life moves the soul closer to perfection. According to the book man is made up of three separate elements; the body, the spirit and the spiritual body. One's spirit also predates the matter of the universe and will outlast it. After the publication of 'The Spirits Book' Kardec's Spiritist doctrine began to take root, firstly in France from where it spread throughout Europe and found its way to North America. Most significant, however, was the reaction to Spiritism in South America. In Brazil the Spiritist movement swept across the nation and it is still one of the country's main religions to this day with millions of Kardec's followers from Brazil visiting his tombstone in Paris every year.

Number of Pages: 548

Dimensions: 1.38 x 8.5 x 5.5 IN

Publication Date: June 02, 2010

Report copyright infringement

by Manly P. Astrology is another disputed subject which is gaining widespread public support. With computerization available, almost every aspect of prediction can be explored scientifically. Many prominent minds of the past have accepted both reincarnation and astrology, and it is only natural that the two beliefs have much in common. If we have lived before, it would be interesting to discover, if possible, the place, time, and circumstances of a previous embodiment. In many cases, of course, such knowledge might have traumatic effects. Most individuals find memories of the present life difficult to bear. The walls of the Borobudur, a magnificent Buddhist ruin on the island of Java, are decorated with scenes from the 600 previous lives of Gautama Buddha. Only the Perfectly Enlightened One could contemplate such a panorama of previous births with reasonable composure. To most Buddhists rebirth is a simple fact. It is one of the determining elements in the ethical and moral philosophies of these people.

The question naturally arises: Would it be possible astrologically to prove beyond a shadow of doubt that reincarnation is an actual fact? Could a chart be set up at the time of death which would be the birth chart of the entity entering the spiritual world, and would it be possible for such a chart to reveal the condition of that entity in the after-death state as well as the time and place of its rebirth on the physical plane? Would it also be conceivable that a birth chart of the present life could provide some clue to the previous incarnation? Hindu philosophers would answer these questions in the affirmative, but Western thinkers have strong reservations.

Number of Pages: 50

Dimensions: 0.12 x 9 x 6 IN

Publication Date: May 21, 2022

Report copyright infringement

by Maris Kreizman (Author)

A debut essay collection by the inimitable cultural critic Maris Kreizman--an introspective, searing account of the life experiences that have pushed this former "good Democrat" even further to the political left

At the heart of this funny, acerbic, and bravely honest book of essays is Maris Kreizman, a former rule follower and ambition monster who once believed the following truths to be self-evident: that working very hard would lead to admission to a good college, which would lead to a good job at a good company, which would then lead to personal fulfillment and a sense of purpose, along with adequate health care and eventual home ownership and plenty of money waiting in a retirement account. With enemy planes rumbling overhead, she organised a series of visualisations to formulate "seed ideas in the group mind of the race", archetypal visions to invoke angelic protection and uphold British morale under fire. "The war has to be fought and won on the physical plane," she wrote, "before physical manifestation can be given to the archetypal ideals. What was sown will grow and bear seed." As the war developed, this was consolidated with further work for the renewal of national and international accord. For the first time the Fraternity's doors were opened to anyone who wanted to join in and learn the previously secret methods of esoteric mind-working. With unswerving optimism she guided her fraternity through the dark days of the London Blitz, continuing her weekly letters even when the bombs came through her own roof. Sharing this intimate part of our being, she believes, can be the start of new ways of being with each other. From dream workshops to her annual Dream Festivals, IONE has encouraged the creation of communities of dreamers - a vision, shared with Pauline Oliveros, of a harmonious, self-sustaining network of artists and dreamers that led to the founding of the Deep Listening Institute.
IONE's exploration of the reality of the dream and the dream of reality over many decades has led her to appreciating the quantum nature of dreaming. The quantum theory of consciousness suggests that it can exist everywhere simultaneously in the fabric of the universe. Quantum Dreaming takes a non-linear journey through IONE's memories; the dreams of her friends and community members; scientific research into neuroscience, cosmology and physics; and historical dream traditions from around the world, including The Dreaming of Australian Aboriginal culture, ancient Chinese Taoist philosophy and Haudenosaunee Dream Festivals. The book describes how prayer during extended fasts can heal the body and soul, and bring practitioners greater spiritual power to exalt and glorify Jesus Christ.

Franklin Hall was born in Coffeyville, Kansas, in 1909. Hall's father died when Franklin was only twelve, leaving him distraught with both his loss and the responsibility of supporting his mother and five younger siblings. During these hard times, he looked to the local Pentecostal church for guidance. The church became a major influence on the lives of the young Hall children and their widowed mother, who remarried the reverend soon after.

Hall began his own traveling ministry during the Great Depression. But he didn't become well known among evangelicals until the release of his first book, Atomic Power With God Thru Fasting and Prayer, in 1946.

In the book, Hall described his own introduction to fasting and prayer through friendship with a Oklahoma family advocating the practice in 1932. He fasted and prayed with them in anticipation of a large revival-and at the ensuing event, "scores of people were healed of all types of afflictions."

He became convinced of the power of fasting and began to preach its efficacy as he traveled. In 1946, a group of "Holy Ghost people" began a long session of prayer and fasting, lasting between ten and forty days. According to Hall, they experienced a great spiritual awakening. Some even found healing of physical ailments during the fast. As word of the event spread, Hall found that there was heavy demand for more information about the power of fasting and prayer.

Later that same year, Hall wrote Atomic Power. The book explores how fasting intensifies prayer by " bringing] unity and filling] us with the glory of God." Through the combination of these two acts, he believed one could enhance their "spiritual appetites" and curtail their hunger, sex, and greed appetites-thereby uncovering their "spiritual atomic power with God that lies available to every Christian."

Hall acknowledged that fasting and prayer were not new. Beyond the multiple examples from the Bible, and specifically from the life of Christ, he cited the fasting and prayer of Native Americans and Muslims who abstained from food as a regular part of their devotional exercises.

In addition to the why of fasting, the book explained how one should fast. A complete fast, Hall wrote, should last from the time hunger leaves to the time hunger returns-usually 21 to 40 days. Water should be consumed in abundance to clean out the stomach and intestines of waste. And when it's time to break the fast, Hall provided a detailed breakdown of what to eat and when.

Atomic Power brought success and notoriety to Hall, who continued to travel across the country evangelizing to crowds of up to 5,000 people. Immediately after Atomic Power, he published The Fasting Prayer in 1947 and Glorified Fasting: The ABC of Fasting in 1948. He published a total of 17 books during his lifetime. Hall and his wife, Helen, founded the Hall Deliverance Foundation in the mid-1950s. This alliance of churches and ministries followed Hall's teachings for fasting and prayer. The couple also started Miracle Word, a ministry newsletter that had 24,000 subscribers worldwide at its peak. Some other evangelists and Pentecostals did not agree with Hall's teachings. Still, fasting had staunch believers through the 1950s and beyond, including some notable evangelists like Gordon Lindsay, William Branham, and Orval Jaggers. Hall's work has now been inspiring Christians to explore the benefits of fasting on their physical and spiritual health for over 70 years.

Number of Pages: 108

Dimensions: 0.26 x 9 x 6 IN

Publication Date: May 31, 2020

Report copyright infringement

by Manly P. There, at the Culture and Free Thought Association, susan held a series of workshops for young people who had been displaced to tent encampments. The lives of all participants were marked by unrelenting Israeli violence and extraordinary loss--of home, family, safety, education, electricity, and all the structures of life. They'd fled from place to place as Israel's colonial violence swirled around them, complete with food and water insecurity and constant threat. Still, despite the bitterness of life in tents and the dangers of travel, they came together to share in the refuge of writing and community.

Samya recounts a tender moment with an old man mending shoes in the street, while her cousin Saja hides books in her closet, hoping they and her home will still be there when she returns. Ghassan is haunted by the baby he rescued from the rubble, who for a time became his son. Fatima risks it all retrieve her clothes from a danger zone buzzing with drones and warplanes. Maram's loving aunt is gone, and chaos inhabits Amr's mind. Samah, Lubna, Rizq, and Nebal take us by the hand through raining death, trails of tears, classroom shelters, and shared clothes in crowded tents.

Every Moment Is a Life delivers rare, unfiltered portraits of life under genocide, platforming the emerging voices struggling to survive in Gaza today. With courage, anger, love, agony, and--impossibly--hope, these achingly tender voices from Gaza will stay with us, captured in these pages, forever.

*All proceeds go to the contributors in Gaza and to Palestine Writes Literature Festival
Author Biography

susan abulhawa is a Palestinian American writer and political activist.
